Background

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) has developed, in-house, an advanced traffic management and traveler information software system that is currently operational in the Mn/DOT Regional Traffic Management Center (RTMC).  The software, typically referred to as the Intelligent Roadway Information System (IRIS), allows ramp-meter, Dynamic Message Sign (DMS), and camera control, as well as retrieving and archiving data from the nearly 5,000 loop detectors throughout the Twin Cities.  Mn/DOT has recently demonstrated the portability of IRIS by deploying IRIS installations in St. Cloud, Minnesota and Rochester, Minnesota.  A complete summary of the IRIS features and functionality is available in a related document.

At the request of numerous public transportation agencies, Mn/DOT is considering releasing the IRIS software as Open Source General Public Licensed (GPL) software, therefore allowing other agencies to deploy IRIS without incurring the costs of software procurement.

This site is intended to facilitate discussion about the potential circulation of this software.
